Frequently asked questions

What is included in a psychological evaluation?

Evaluations may include any or all of the following assessments:

  • Background and intake questionnaires for parents/caregivers (online forms)
  • Review of medical and/or educational records
  • Initial parent/caregiver interview (virtual or in person)
  • Parent and teacher rating scales (online forms)
  • Observations at home, in the community, or at school (virtual or in person)
  • Child/adolescent interview (in person)
  • Cognitive tests with the child (in person)
  • Educational tests with the child (in person)

What is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

  • CBT is a type of therapy for older children and teens to support developing healthy thoughts (how we think) and behaviors (what we do). Our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are strongly connected!
  • CBT involves self-monitoring and weekly homework.
  • Goals are set in collaboration with the child and the parent and goals are evaluated periodically to make sure we are making progress.

What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?

  • DBT is a type of therapy helpful for developing strong emotional regulation skills. It was originally just for adults, but it can be adapted for school age children and teens.
  • DBT skills are often taught in a group setting, sometimes with both children and parents.
  • Like CBT, DBT includes weekly homework assignments for practice and reflection.

Are you a play therapist?

  • I am not a certified play therapist, no, but I do use play in therapy, yes! Play is developmentally appropriate and is often referred to as the language of children.
  • I use play, art, and sensory activities to create a comfortable atmosphere for children to engage in therapy with me and to help children to communicate in different ways. A regulated child is a child whose mind is ready to think and learn.
  • If you hear loud giggling and silly noises during a therapy session, just know: serious work is happening!

Do you take insurance?

  • Not right now. I am in the process of becoming paneled with Blue Cross and Aetna.
  • For now, I am self-pay only for evaluations and therapy services.
  • Upon request, I can provide you with a superbill to submit for reimbursement by your insurance; this does not guarantee you will receive any or all reimbursement. For specific questions about your insurance benefits, please call your insurance company.

Are you still a school psychologist?

Yes. Before setting up any services, I will have to ask about where your child attends school to ensure there is no conflict of interest with my current school district. If so, I will happily support you in finding another psychologist!
